Since starting her studies in Marine Biology at the University of Concepción, Chile, Yoanna has been interested in plankton ecology. During her PhD, she began her studies of microplankton respiration and the effects marine viruses on respirations rates of microplankton and picophytoplankton. She worked under the supervision of Renato Quñones, an expert in planktonic respiration at the University of Concepción. Prior to receiving her PhD, Yoanna spend about a year at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, Gothenburg, Sweden working on picoflagellate viruses with Elisabeth Sahlsten. After finishing her PhD, Yoanna did a postdoc at COPAS, an oceanographic center at the University of Concepción, where she studied microbial and zooplankton ecology. In 2004, she joins the MOVE project to help characterize viruses that infect diatoms of Chesapeake Bay
Research Focus:
Algal virus ecology, with emphasis on infection cycle, molecular structure, and ecology of viruses that infect diatoms.
