Wayne received his formal training in protistology/cell biology under the mentorship of Eugene B. Small and John O. Corliss at the University of Maryland, College Park. He migrated into the field of biological oceanography/plankton ecology while working at the Johns Hopkins University, Chesapeake Bay Institute from the late 70s through the 80s. In 1990, he accepted a position at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Wayne is an active member in the International Society of Protistologists, having served in several capacities including program chair, chair of awards committee, executive committee member at large and president. He has also served as an associate editor for the Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology and is member of the board of reviewers for Aquatic Microbial Ecology. He has mentored a number of MS and PhD students as adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, covering topics in protistan ecology, parasitism, mixotrophy, taxonomy, and phylogeny.
